When should kids start getting checked?
Dr. Joel Richards
When should kids start getting checked by a chiropractor is a fairly common question. If you were to walk into the Cafe of Life Chiropractic Studio on any given day you would see children and babies playing or lying on the floor colouring with the lovely Laura until it was their turn to jump on the table and get their spines checked for vertebral subluxation. If you were new to our office or to chiropractic, you may be asking why are all those children here getting adjusted?
The short answer is simple they have a spine and nervous system just like an adult and will have the same benefits as an adult when receiving an adjustment. Lets look at why anyone who can breath and has a spine and nervous system will benefit from chiropractic care. The nervous system (NS) works by sending and receiving signals or impulses to all parts of the body. It is the MASTER control center of the body!
The NS is protected by the spine, consisting of 24 movable vertebrae. When the spine is in its proper alignment it protects the nerve pathways. But when vertebrae become misaligned, interference to the nerve impulses occurs — which reduces the overall functioning of the nervous system and of the particular organ to which it is assigned.
The first person in a family to get their spine checked should be the children because, the birth process, even under normal conditions, is frequently the first cause of spinal stress. The effects of vertebral subluxation have been well documented by leading scientists and researchers from all over the world. The following studies are just a sample of the literature that exists.
Dr. Godfrey Gutmann, a German physician, conducted a study of over 1,000 newborns shortly after birth. He discovered that over 80% of the infants had suffered trauma to their cervical spine, which resulted in vertebral subluxations.1
Research published in a medical journal in august of 2002 described exactly why all infants should be evaluated by a Chiropractor after birth. The study outlined how the symptoms exhibited by babies who die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) can be triggered by asymmetries of the upper neck.2
The science and research continues to support that the power of the chiropractic adjustment is restoring the integrity of the nervous system. It is evident that these benefits should be started as early as birth and continued till the grave.
